We know, dear readers: there’s one moment you all look forward to in the Remida calendar year. That’s the time when we drop our summer reading list. And here it is! Pop open your parasols, the holiday mode is on.
The Goodbye Hotel, Michael Bible
The tale of a turtle. Actually, two. A story of love, loss of innocence, and time slipping through your hands. A book as subtle as it is profound, you barely notice until suddenly, you’re laid bare. You glance down and find your heart gently sunbathing, fully exposed. We strongly recommend SPF 50.
Open, Andre Agassi
If you haven’t read it yet… shame on you. A timeless gem, perfect for this new wave of tennis fever. A “bloody awful sport,” as Fognini allegedly muttered during the final points of his Wimbledon match against Alcaraz. Here, the beauty and brutality of a life volleyed back and forth at breakneck speed.
Outline, Rachel Cusk
Ideal for a summer’s day in London, or any urban escape with a warm breeze. Bonus points if you’ve got neighbours worth spying on (ours live just across from 10 Basing Street). Between the setting, the mood, the soft hum of city heat, and Cusk’s voice, suddenly it feels like Greek sun on your skin. Yes, you can tan indoors.
Le Diaboliques, Boileau-Narcejac
From the French noir duo par excellence, a classic that still chills; complete with a take on gender politics that feels eerily current. Perfect for sunlit open-plan offices. If you’re reading indoors… Just keep an eye on the bathtub.
This is Your Mind on Plants, Michael Pollan
Caffeine. Opium. Mescaline. The line-up alone is deliciously tempting. But if you think only two of those count as “drugs,” think again. Pollan lays it all out with sharp insight, inviting you to reconsider what counts as socially acceptable highs. And if coffee is your natural state, well, you’ve never really been sober.
The Vegetarian, Han Kang
Not one for the faint of heart. If Michael Bible gently slips beneath your skin, Han Kang goes in with a scalpel. There’s nothing vegetarian about this novel: it’s raw, and it hits hard. You’ll swallow it in hours, but digesting it will take time. And that’s the point: to feel, to understand, to bloom.
The Savage Detectives, Roberto Bolaño
This one’s for the bold. Nearly 700 pages of swirling voices, shifting locations, and lingering scents. Bolaño won’t let you go, not for a second. Best read on long journeys, under generous shade, and with your mind wide open. Because wherever you are, you’ll end up in Mexico City.
And you? What are you reading?
